Osmaston Park 5 star Review

I want to begin by saying that you can not get beat Osmaston park for it’s location and view/ I think I have only ever been to one other wedding venue to rival this location and that was in Wales. Photos don’t do it justice.

Osmaston Hall is built in the early Victorian Tudor style and is run by the approachable Sir Andrew Walker-Okeover who himself, married here. It was his vision that turned it into the wedding venue it is today. Whilst couples don’t really get to see much of the Manor House itself, wedding events and parties are housed in a beautiful marquee set on a hilltop to provide the best 180 degree views you can imagine.

The venue itself

Forget your pre-conceived ideas of a marquee, in the times that I have performed here, each time the marquee has looked amazing with carpeted floors, decadent chairs, table settings, lighting etc. Once the views have cast their spell upon you, you forget that you are even in a marquee.

The marquee itself can comfortably seat 200 guests but can be extended to seat 500. The grounds are also at your disposal over the course of your wedding to have bouncy castles, croquet or even to land a helicopter if you wanted an entrance with ‘wow’ factor! I’m sure, Sir Andrew Walker-Okeover could even organise this.

Osmaston Park Photo

Ostmaston team up with the best suppliers in the area to provide the best food, entertainment, service and event possible and it’s no wonder it has established itself as Derbyshire’s premier wedding venue. Osmaston wedding venue has only a small window for weddings and their wedding season runs from 1st April till the 31st October. Not only that, but rightfully so, Osmaston Park is an exclusive wedding venue. This means you will not find yourself bumping into another bride on your special day which I have seen much too often.

Osmaston Park outside of weddings

Even if you weren’t hiring Osmaston Park as your wedding venue, it can also be enjoyed independently too. Osmaston, itself is a pretty little village just off the A52 with thatched houses, and a pub. The park itself boasts some beautiful walks, lakes and forests and is something of a hidden gem, with it being just 1 mile south of Ashbourne and so close to the thriving town of Derby.

To find out more about Osmaston Park, do not hesitate to get in touch with their office. You can find all their details on their website here: https://www.osmastonpark.com/

Definitely a 5 star review from me! *****

7 sophisticated wedding entertainment ideas

Have you forgotten to sort out the entertainment?

Are you worried that you  have spent too long deciding on the colour scheme of the flowers that you’ve not given a thought to how to keep the guests having fun?

If you’ve trawled the internet and found nothing sophisticated or classy enough for your special day?

Don’t worry, having attended hundreds of weddings as a wedding magician, I’ve come across many fun, varied, excited and sophisticated wedding entertainment ideas, performers and acts that might meet your requirements. Below I’ve outlined a few.

First things first. You may be asking why you need to budget for entertainment at your wedding?

There are a couple of reasons. The first being that more often than not, it’s the entertainment that is often the most memorable part of your special day. Secondly, weddings can be boring. The British are know to struggle with making small talk at the best of times. Couple that with them being thrust into an unknown environment with people you don’t know. It’s worth having something booked in to break that ice.

Why are weddings boring?

Well, there are massive lulls in the day which can do with a bit of energy injected in them. Be it when the room is being turn around after the wedding breakfast. Alternatively  it whilst the the bride and groom are having their photos taken and the guests are eating canapes. The other point I mentioned is that often their are awkward moments in the day. Sometimes it is as your guests sit down on tables with people they don’t know or whilst they are waiting to be called for their photos. Finally it’s as new guests arrive for the evening entertainment. Whichever of these gaps that need filling, hiring some form of sophisticated wedding entertainment is an ideal way to break the ice between guests and really lubricate the conversation.

Not only that, but hiring a professional wedding entertainer allows you to have peace of mind that your guests will be being entertained. This frees you up to go about your duties of hosting unburdened.

Here is my personal list of 10 sophisticated wedding entertainment ideas. The ideas below are fun, sophisticated and guaranteed to make you day extra memorable.

Caricaturist

This is an extremely versatile wedding entertainment option. They can mix and mingle between guests sketching and drawing amazing pictures of your guests. Some caricaturists like to roam, others are seated whilst couples sit opposite for a sketch lassting between 5-10mins. Usually caricaturists can get through about 30-35 guests over a 2 hour booking.

Some sketch with pens and leave you with a black and white image. Others include colours. Others are now using ipad style sketch pads which they can email you leaving your hands free.

Cost wise, Caricaturists charge approximately £350 for 2 hours.

Silhouettist

There are only a few of these highly skilled craftsmen in the UK! Booking one, you can be guaranteed you will be getting something truly unique for your wedding. Again, they can mix and mingle between guests cutting profile shapes with incredible accuracy. These silhouettes are then presented to the guests in a card as a true souvenir of the special day.

Needing nothing more than a pair of scissors and couple of slips of black paper, silhouettists can blend shamelessly between guests.

They charge upwards of £400 for 2 hours mix and mingle wedding silhouetting.

DJ

I don’t think I’ve ever attended a wedding without a DJ. It doesn’t mean you have to have one. Usually a sound system with a pre-edited playlist would serve equally well, and at the same time guarantee the music you want to hear is correct.

Notheless – a DJ is a quintessential part of a wedding and frame the dance floor well as well as providing a great quality sound and be able to make announcements and offer microphone for speeches etc.

On average a wedding DJ will charge £400 for the night.

Singing Waiters

Keeping with the music theme, singing waiters are a great addition to the day. They will usually pose as waiters – often acting clumsy before breaking into verse. Before you know it, everyone will be singing. Everyone will be clapping and your day will be even more memorable.

Fun, musical and entertaining. Hiring a singing waiter will set you back about £1250 for one waiter.

Impersonators

Del Boy, James Bond and Oprah are some of the celebrity look -alikes which will stay in character for the duration of your wedding. Doing nothing in particular except – what they do best – impersenations – these are an extremely novel idea.

Cost wise, they range between £250 and £500 for a couple of hours, but are usually happy to stay around a bit if some guests haven’t had their photo taken with them.

Photobooths

Photo-booths are becoming more and more popular. You can hire them to be inside or outside.  Photo-booths are usually hosted by a a couple to oversee your fun and they usually come with a couple of boxes of gimmicks and costumes for fun and laughter.

Video booths are now becoming popular – offering a ‘big brother’ style booth allowing guests to record individual messages to the bride and groom.

These start at about £400-600 for the evening.

Close up magician

Last and of course, by no means least is hiring a wedding magician. If you are looking for something to truly make an impression on your guests then hiring a wedding magician could be a great option. They are perfect for mixing and mingle between guests over the wedding photographs. They are ideal for over the wedding breakfast. Perhaps the most popular time is for the nights entertainment – as long as the DJ doesn’t play his music too loud.

Hiring a close up magician for your wedding can cost about £350 for 2 hours.

Looking for recommendations? Well, there’s going to be some bias here. I’ve been offering my own unique form of sophisticated wedding entertainment for over a decade. I offer hard-hitting value for money magic and mind reading.

How to make your wedding day even more magical, by booking an incredible magician to amaze and entertain your guests.

10 things to check before hiring a magician for your wedding

How to make your wedding day even more magical, by booking an incredible wedding magician to amaze and entertain your guests

Booking a magician for your wedding has become incredibly popular in recent years. TV magicians have made magic cool again. Hiring a wedding magician is perfect for breaking the ice and bringing laughter to the faces of all ages.

Professional wedding magician, Duncan William, sat down and compiled his top ten suggestions you should check for before hiring a wedding for your special day. This is the definitive guide for making sure you book the correct entertainer to leave your guests speechless.

Ten things every couple should check before hiring a magician for their wedding

Recommendations

The first thing you should always do is ask around for recommendations. These could come from friends, family, professionals or people who have seen a magician at an event or wedding. Facebook and social media are also great platforms for getting good (and bad) recommendations. There are usually Facebook groups which allow you to post questions to other brides. Some brides may have already used a magician for their own wedding.

A word of advice, however, would be to always meet the entertainer you have shortlisted. The reason for this is that more often than not, for most people, this may be their first experience seeing live magic. One person’s level of quality may not be another.

The best advice would be to start by shortlisting a few performers. After that then arrange to meet some of them to see if they dazzle you as much as they have done to the people who have recommended them.

Videos

With magic being such of a visual art-form, most magicians should be showcasing their abilities by using video. This could be YouTube, Vimeo or some other video sharing platform. This will demonstrate some of their skills and also how they dress, act, reactions they garner and skills they have.

However, it’s also important not to be swayed by a glossy video. In this day and age, skilled video editors can make anything look incredible. They can use fantastic graphics, clever editing and well placed laughter tracks to name a few. Always use the videos offered by a magician as just another taster of their ability. Be careful as what you see on your mobile or desktop screen, does not always translate to your wedding.

Ten things every couple should check before hiring a magician for their wedding

Cost

Sometimes cost can be a deciding factor when booking anything. More often than not, the most essential items for a wedding have already been bought first. Flowers, the venue, food, wine, DJ, dress and rings have all probably eaten up a large part of the budget. However, many surveys suggest that the thing that guests remember most about a wedding is the entertainment. With that in mind, leave some money aside for the entertainment. If you were specifically looking at hiring a wedding magician then prices vary wildly. Some charge more than £750 for 2 hours and others charge £100 for 2 hours. More often than not, a high cost does not always equal better quality. However, lower cost does generally mean lower quality. The average cost of a magician is between £250 and £400 and any more or less it is wise to question ‘Why?’

Of course the market costs change and prices can differ dependent on the time of the year or day of the week.

For example, hiring magician on a Saturday evening in the middle of August (peak wedding season) is likely to be more than a Tuesday day time in January (off-season).

The best recommendation would be to make enquiries with several magicians to get an average price and the shortlist the candidates down into the ones with what fits with your budget and what your tastes are.

Professionalism

This is an all-encompassing word. Sadly it is not always embraced by magicians, mind readers or other wedding entertainers. When looking into recommendations of wedding magicians – its well worth also asking about the professionalism of the magician.

This may cover their punctuality, appearance, how they present themselves to your guests (no swearing) and relationship they build with you before the big day. This would cover email or phone correspondence, contracts, or payment structures.

Style of magic

There are illusionists, mind readers, psychics, sleight of hand artists and inside of each of those genres there are differing styles. Comedic, serious, light hearted, friendly, dark and more.

If you are wanting to hire a magician who can mix and mingle between guests over the wedding photos, it’s recommended not to book someone who needs a table to perform. This kind of requirement will make their performance a lot more limiting. Another example would be that if you are wanting someone to perform an after-dinner stage piece. If you want this style of magic, then it probably wouldn’t be wise to book a close up specialist.

Either way, think about your wedding style and theme and consider whether one magician would be better suited to your special day than another. Again, if you have the opportunity – meet up with them to see if their style fits your requirements.

Distance

The greater the distance the magician is from your wedding venue usually the more expensive they will be. They will they have to factor in the tangible travel costs such as petrol and vehicle wear and tear. Not only that, but they will no doubt have to make a decision whether taking your booking would compromise their ability to take another.

It’s always best to find a local magician for several reasons. The first reason is that there should be fewer eventualities en-route to the venue if they are local. Secondly, if they are local – usually local friends and family members will be able to recommend someone who is local. Finally if the magician is local, then its much easier to meet them beforehand to discuss your requirements. Its also the perfect opportunity to see a few tricks and some mind reading demonstrations. Furthermore, if they are an illusionist, there is usually a greater chance that they will be performing in your local area so you can go and check them out.

Using an agency or hiring a wedding magician independently

Entertainment agencies are putting in a real effort to promoting their services offering magicians for weddings. With large marketing budgets, these agencies have the ability to climb google rankings and marketing themselves extremely well. Of course they have to recoup this cost. This usually comes in the form of a commission taken from any act you book through them. Usually this is between 10-25%. If you have a wedding magician which charges £250 independently through his own website – you may find yourself paying an additional £60 just to use their service.

Agencies will of course say that you can peace of mind when booking through them. If the magician you have booked through them is unable to do the gig for any reason the agency will find a suitable replacement. However, a professional magician would offer the exact same service as they will want to preserve their reputation. An agency will have access to any number of magicians on their books. However often these have not always been vetted or seen before.

Booking independently can save you £60 or upwards dependent on the type of booking. However if you book a magician who is possibly not professional, or does not value his reputation as much as an agency or a professional, then there is every chance there could be issues if they cancel. You may very well be left with no suitable replacement. In hindsight you may think you should have booked through an agency in the first place.

Ten things every couple should check before hiring a magician for their wedding

Experience

The word experience covers a whole array of thoughts. There a many magicians who have great experience performing complicated sleight of hand magic. However, when it comes to performing live, in front of your guests, their lack of experience  may become extremely noticeable.

It is always worth questioning whether the magician has performed at weddings before. It’s worth asking if they have performed at the kind of event or wedding you are holding. Also, question how many guests they have  performed to in your allotted period of time. If you are not booking them for a wedding, but for a different event, it may be worth questioning their suitability for your wedding.

Awards

Don’t be fooled by seeing the words ‘Award Winning Magician’ on the banner of a magician’s website. This may be for some local club magic competition with 2 competitors. It may also be a magic competition that was held 20 years ago. As a result, performing styles have moved on since then. A lot of magicians add this to their site but it is often not backed up with any substance. Take everything written on somebody’s website with a pinch of salt. Be it ‘award winning’ ‘reviews’ or stock images which could have just been downloaded from google.

Website

As mentioned above – a website is essentially an interactive, online business card.  As technology advances these can be and are becoming more flashy and fancy. This visual element may incorrectly sway your decision. However it is important to look under the surface. Read reviews which are authentic and have been verified. Google plus is a great place to start. Next see if the magician has any other videos on his YouTube channel. This will reinforce the quality of their skill, (or not).

Finally see if they write a blog (like this one). It will demonstrate that the site is active.  It will also show that magician has not just built a website and left it to go cold.

Duncan has been wedding magician for over 15 years You can find out more on his homepage www.magicforweddings.co.uk

Sports prediction of the Joshua Vs Klitschko fight, Spurs Vs Arsenal and Atletico Vs Real Madrid

THE SPORTS PREDICTION 2017

On 28th April 2017, Local TV Station – Notts TV got in touch with professional wedding magician and mind reader, Duncan William, to challenge him to make a major sports prediction. He chose to predict the outcome of the World Heavy Weight Fight between Anthony Joshua and Wladamir Klitchsko.  On the 3rd May 2017, Duncan went on to accurately predict the winner, round of defeat and other Bank Holiday sporting events.

Predicting sporting events is a rare event to take place and always leaves people asking ‘how?’ and ‘was it a trick or real’? Having been on Notts TV back in 2014, Duncan was invited to use his skills to predict the outcome of some major sporting events over the May Bank Holiday.

Accepting the challenge, Duncan decided he would predict 3 of the largest sporting events in the sporting calender to predict. First was the World Heavy Weight fight. This was to be held at Wembley. The competitors were British Fighter and Olympic Medalist – Anthony Joshua. His opponent was the reigning World Heavy Weight Champion, Ukranian Boxer, Wladamir Klitschko.

On paper, despite their similar heights and weights, this was something of a David and Goliath fight. Coming into the fight, 41 year old, Klitchsko had defeated the most boxers with an undefeated record. (12) He’d also defeated 10 current or former world champions. He had 68 professional fights and lost 4.

27 year old, Joshua on the other hand had 18 professional fights to his name. All of these were victories by knock out. A previous Olympic champion, Joshua had only been a professional for 4 years.

Duncan had also decided to predict 2 other major sporting events. With the World heavyweight fight taking place on the 29th, Duncan would also predict the outcome of the Spurs Vs Arsenal match on the 30th April. The final sports prediction Duncan would make would be the Champions League Semi Final first leg match between local rivals Real Madrid and Atletico Madrid.

The prediction itself!

On 28th April 2017, Duncan appeared on Notts TV and handed over a signed, verified and sealed prediction in an envelope to TV presenter Iain Chambers. He vowed to keep this safe in a drawer so that no-one could open or tamper with the envelope. He kept his promise.

The bank holiday came and went. On the 3rd May 2017 Duncan returned to the Notts TV studios armed with nothing more than a pile of newspapers.

The envelope was shown sealed, verified and intact. Opening the seal and taking out the prediction. Iain (the presenter) read out load the following.

Sports Prediction

29th April 2017 Joshua Vs Klitschko: Joshua to Win ROUND 11

30th April 2017 Spurs Vs Arsenal: Spurs To Win 2-0

2nd May 2017 Real Madrid Vs Atletico: Real To Win 3-0

Ronaldo WILL score a hatrick!!

The result

All of Duncan’s sports predictions were correct and verified by holding up the newspapers reporting the events the day after. If that wasn’t enough, Duncan then went on to predict what Iain (the presenter) was merely thinking of. Out of any object in the world….Iain was thinking of his arm.

“How have you done that?! This studio has never been so silent!” exclaimed Iain Chambers.

About Duncan

Duncan is one of the most in-demand wedding magicians and mind-readers in the UK. He performs at weddings, parties and corporate events. He has travels both nationally and internationally, from Nottingham to London, and Japan to America. His act truly is unique.

Duncan is often found around the Midlands and London reading minds and leaving guests laughing in amazement as he unlocks their mobile phone, tells them their star sign or tells them their bank PIN number.
